The Ins and Outs of a Motor Trader Insurance Policy
What is a Motor Trader Insurance Policy?
Contrary to popular it isn't:
- the facility to drive any car, whenever you feel like it, regardless of your age
- a way of getting insurance to drive a sports car if you are under 25.
- cover for your mates'/ dad's cars (unless you are a mechanic on a booked job)
- the same as getting trade plates (the broker can not organise trade plates, see the DVLA)
A Motor Trader Insurance policy is the facility to drive a car that you have for a temporary period. This means if you have just bought it at the auction, a car you are working on as a mechanic or you deliver cars for a living.
Who should have a
Motor Trader Insurance Policy?
There are various groups of people who should consider purchasing a Motor Trader Insurance Policy over a more traditional policy or even a fleet policy:
- Motor Traders. Motor Traders are people who buy and sell cars. They will need to pick up cars they have bought at an auction back to their lock up/ pitch. the Motor Trader will need the facility of driving the vehicle to other locations and potentially back to the auction. Motor Traders can sell new, used or a combination of both cars.
- Mechanics. Mechanics will need to road test some vehicles and will need suitable cover if they plan to do this.
- Motor Trader Drivers. These drivers will be responsible for delivering brand new cars. Depending upon the organisation they work for, their employer may well provide them with Trade Plates, which is similar to a Motor Trader Insurance Policy however it will be at a company level rather than an individual level and the driver must be in possestion of the trade plates whilst they drive the identified vehicle.
